Making a Fashion Statement Without Being Inappropriate
Over the years, fashion has taken a turn for the more liberal. We found clothes that revealed a little bit more skin as the years went by, and accessories that deviated from the norm. In today’s culture, a person’s fashion sense has become an extension of one’s personality. However, where does one draw the line between the right to express one’s self while adhering to the basic rules of propriety? Which one should be given more weight over the other?
We can take, for instance, one’s taste in clothes. While it may be true that we should be free to choose what we want to wear, society will frown upon a big-shot executive wearing a t-shirt, jeans and flip-flops to work. One will even find raised eyebrows at the sight of such an executive in a formal coat, but sporting a tie emblazoned with every Looney Tunes character imaginable.
The key to making a fashion statement and exercising one’s creativity is to practice prudence and temperance. We will have to accept the fact that we live in a society that unwittingly sets certain standards and rules — rules that, when violated, can offend people. One need not be too bold and out there to express one’s wacky side.
Let us first consider prudence. One will need to develop the ability to discern which is appropriate for what situation. If, for instance, you have a career in the arts and move in a circle where showing up to work in strategically torn jeans and pink hair is perfectly acceptable, then by all means, show up for work looking like that. But if your job has something to do with financial analysis in the middle of Manhattan, then you may want to dress appropriately and find other ways to express yourself through fashion.
From there, we move on to temperance. If you have to take it a little easy as far as “creativity” is concerned, you can choose less obvious ways in expressing your preferences. For men, instead of choosing a bold tie, why not sport a non-traditional pair of cufflinks instead? Nowadays, there are simply way too many cufflink designs to choose from. One will not run out of pairs to use even on a daily basis.
You can take your pick: if you want to be a super hero for the day, then you can choose from any superhero-themed cufflinks designs. Be Batman through Batman cufflinks or Superman through Superman cufflinks. Say you want to express support for the Knicks during the NBA playoffs. You couldn’t show up for work in a jersey and ball cap. Instead why not try on a pair of Knicks Sports Cufflinks instead.
Cufflinks are a very subtle way of expressing one’s self. They are not at all that conspicuous, such that even the most outrageous of cufflinks designs will most probably not get all that much attention. Compare a pair of Mickey Mouse Cufflinks in sterling silver with a set of Mickey Mouse Ears and you will know exactly what we mean!
